Do I need a duvet cover for it?

No. It is finished on the outside and goes straight on the bed. If you prefer a washable cover you can change, the Duvet Cover Set works over a separate insert. If you would like to wash it less often, put a top sheet between you and the comforter to keep it cleaner between washes.

Is it warm enough for winter without being too hot in summer?
